The start of a new year has been celebrated, and for many people, there is the immediate feeling that their lives must be resolved or changed in some manner. Have you, or did you, make resolutions for the new year? Are these the same resolutions made from year-to-year?
More importantly, do you feel a mounting pressure, as the new year moves forward, to make the changes you’ve resolved to make at the beginning of the year?
In this new post, Bruce J. wants for you to release the pressure of resolutions, and instead, look to each year with hope – a hope based upon promises you make to yourself for self-fulfillment and betterment.
Making a Promise to Yourself
As I sought initial wisdom about this topic from my higher power, the following was received: During the month of January, there’s an unspoken pressure to develop resolutions. What’ll be more effective is to make a promise to yourself: Begin with a promise to love yourself more, no exceptions, then watch your life transform.
The idea of making a promise to yourself is something that has really stayed with me, as I have seen my own resolutions come and go, though a promise is something much more connected and meaningful. And it can be if the promise is related to self-care, rather than expectations of others. For example, if I promise to care for, and love myself more, this seems achievable. But telling myself to lose weight for the umpteenth time seems hollow, unless I set it as a separate goal, and relate it to a health concern.
But even the word “resolution” seems to indicate my life is incomplete in some manner, and this is something I have to learn to overcome in and of itself, as I need to see myself as complete, just as I am now. You may find this interesting as well, from the perspective of who I am. My life is far from perfect. I’m not sitting on a mountain somewhere, pontificating quotes from the Universe, counting streams of money as it flows in. Instead, I have been dealing with significant health and financial issues, which means I am like the average person who is trying to find their way in this world.
This leads me to the topic I wanted to learn more about while in a meditative state: How is it possible to start the year with hope, rather than feeling the pressure to make promises – which may or may not be fulfilled?
As to gaining this insight, anyone can do this through practice and belief, by tapping into the wisdom available through their higher power. You have discovered someone who has been on a spiritual journey of self-empowerment long enough I want to teach this to others.
My Quest for Knowledge: The following is what I learned while attuned to my higher power. I sit quietly, focus my thoughts on a beginning question, and allow thoughts to flow through my mind.
Dear Ones: You can resolve to do something new or different, but a resolution is typically no more than a wish, hope, or dream. As such, it holds a limited probability of long-term success. In contrast, a promise can serve as an anchor, creating a deep and lasting source of change from an energetic level, one which engages the core of your being, along with your emotional center.
As to this time of year, a promise establishes a setpoint and focus for the months ahead, if you understand the true purpose of what it means to make a promise to yourself. This is not meant to just be another affirmation about some quality you want to embrace. You should consider the basics of yourself and how you care for yourself and your very well-being.
The following questions will help you: Have you been taking the best of care for yourself? Can you look at yourself in a mirror without any negativity? The answer you give now will help guide you in the development of your initial promise. It also helps determine how the rest of your life progresses.
Developing a Promise: The development of a promise to yourself is also a time to examine your beliefs; from your life, to your future, and who you are meant to be.
The following are some questions to help you get started:
What is it that guides you in your daily life, along with important decisions you make? In other words, do you have an internal compass to follow? Do you make it a practice to listen to your internal wisdom?
Do you know what it means to listen to your inner being? If not, this is a good time to begin to explore your sense of internal guidance, or your internal GPS. You have it. You may not recognize it, or you may couch it within religious terminology.
Important Elements of a Promise:
The most important elements of a promise should involve dedication of time to yourself, your self-care, self-maintenance, loving yourself more, and as equally important, loving those who are close to you. This certainly may seem like a big ask for those who are very career-driven, and yet, one day that career could be gone, and what will be left? It will be you, alone, with yourself, and you not knowing how to cope with yourself and the silence. At the end of your life, what is it that really matters? Yes, a job is vital to your survival, there’s no question. But if you are not healthy, how will you sustain that job? If you do not love yourself enough, how will you thrive? If you do not love those close to you, they will fade away as well.
Make this new year a mental turning point for yourself: You are going to develop a promise statement.
Begin with the following words: I will. It’s that simple.
Now go back and reflect upon your well-being, both externally and internally. How are you doing now? Have you been paying attention to your physical and spiritual conditions? Are you listening to, and following guidance you have available? Are you open to receiving and giving love?
This year holds great promise for you. Add your promise statement to it. You will be surprised how your year evolves, in ways you did not plan, or could not have imagined, simply by resolving to do something.
Listen for Guidance:
When you decide you want to listen, focus quietly, and tune out the external noise, even for a little while, the direction you’ll receive from your higher power will guide you in a way you may not understand at first, but you will comprehend as you learn to trust.
You will receive the guidance and wisdom you need; at the time you need it. There is no need to resolve to become better. You are perfect now. You are loved. Just make a promise to find your purpose for the months ahead, and your life will blossom.
Are you ready to discover a future filled with promise and hope?
